Montgomery County Concert Band, Lansdale, PA

The Montgomery County Concert Band was founded in April, 1995, by Stephen E. Frederick and Paul Ferla. Since its beginning the band has presented over 250 concerts for a variety of community celebrations, seasonal/park concerts and holiday events throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Players come from a variety of daily occupations and backgrounds including education, the business world, computer industry, scientists, and students. Several are retirees. All began their musical journey participating in school music programs. Many current members continued to play in groups beyond the school setting through the years, and many have joined to rekindle their love of playing band music in the concert ensemble setting. Musicians and directors are all volunteers donating their time to prepare the various programs for the community.
In the spring of 2014, the band performed for both the National Convention of the Association of Concert bands in Allentown and the PMEA Annual State Conference, in Hershey. This marked the second time the band has performed at the PMEA Conference. In 2017 the band was honored to be a recipient of the Sudler Silver Scroll Award presented by the John Philip Sousa Association as one of three outstanding community bands in the U.S. MCCB is only the fourth community band from Pennsylvania to receive this award. MCCB has presented benefit concerts for Lansdale Community Housing, Manna on Main Street and the 300th anniversary of the founding of Trappe, PA. Annually the band performs three formal concerts which include their Community Band Festival.

The band plays a varied repertoire from standard and contemporary literat=ure to the Broadway stage, classical transcriptions, marches, and patriotic medleys. Featured soloists with the band have included Philadelphia Orchestra principal tuba Carol Jantsch, trombonist Scott Shelsta, jazz saxophonist Andrew Neu plus outstanding local musicians Peter Neu, Dave Orehowsky, Dave DiValentino, Jeff Miller, Jacqueline Washam, and from the U.S. Navy Band, Souderton native soloists from the band have been Allison Kerschner, Jan Jochems, David O’Neill, Michael Langston and Ray Orehowsky. Guest conductors include Dr. Emily Threinen, Dr. Deb Confredo and Dr. Travis Weller.

Since 1999 the MCCB and the Borough of Lansdale have collaborated as an official “TubaChristmas International” site, bringing together over 70 tuba, sousaphone, euphonium and baritone players from the tri-state area.
The band is totally self-supported and a 501©(3) non-profit organization dependent entirely on donations from the public. Formal concerts during the year are free to the public, a free-will offering is accepted and appreciated. Further information about the band can be found at our website: www.montcoband.org.

Bands sometimes played during combat on the battlefield.

The presentation will cover the history of Union and Confederate bands, instruments, organizational structure and music with period photographs and recorded performances by recreated military bands.
