South Jersey Area Wind Ensemble

Established in 1997, the South Jersey Area Wind Ensemble is a community concert band that rehearses and performs a wide variety of music for the
modern Wind Band. The ensemble is directed by Keith W. Hodgson, Director of Music Education at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia as well as Associate conductor, Ronald J. Poorman and Assistant conductor, Jennifer Poorman Hodgson. Founding President Karen Poorman leads the ensemble’s direction and Board of Directors.

The South Jersey Area Wind Ensemble is a 65 member concert band composed of professional musicians, current and retired music educators, and college graduates who have maintained high musical standards since playing in their college bands. Since 1997 the SJAWE has commissioned fourteen compositions for wind band and hosted three composition contests. In 2006, the SJAWE received the Sudler Silver Scroll Award from the John Philip Sousa Foundation that is awarded to outstanding community bands in North America. The SJAWE has performed at the New Jersey Music Educator’s Association Conference in 2000, 2005 & 2011, at the Association of Concert Bands National Convention in Allentown, PA in March of 2014, in Woodcliff Lake, NJ in 2019 and at the 2017 Sousa Band Festival at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

The SJAWE is conducted annually by high profile guest conductors as well as provides a “Side By Side” performance experience for approximately 40 high school musicians from accross South Jersey. Guest conductors have included: Mark Stickney, Timothy Holtan, Christian Wilhjelm, William Berz, Larry Lang, Michelle Rakers, Frank Mazzeo, Darryl Bott, Edward Teleky, Edward Lisk, Keith Brion, Stephen Melillo, William Silvester, Peter Boonshaft, Bryan Shelburne, Joe Brashier, Timothy Oliver, and John Pastin.

Recent musical endeavors have included an all organ concert with concert band at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City and the addition of an SJAWE small
ensembles concert that was very successful and will continue annually. Located just 8 miles southwest of Atlantic City, the South Jersey Area Wind Ensemble has made their home at Mainland Regional HS in Linwood, NJ, since 1997.
