Established in 1997, the South Jersey Area Wind Ensemble is a community concert band that rehearses and performs a wide variety of music for the modern Wind Band. The ensemble is directed by Keith W. Hodgson, Director of Music Education at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia as well as Associate conductor, Ronald J. Poorman and Assistant conductor, Jennifer Poorman Hodgson. Founding President Karen Poorman leads the ensemble’s direction and Board of Directors.
The South Jersey Area Wind Ensemble is a 65 member concert band composed of professional casino musicians, music educators, and college graduates who have maintained high musical standards since playing in their college bands. Since 1997 the SJAWE has commissioned fourteen compositions for wind band and hosted three composition contests. In 2006, the SJAWE received the Sudler Silver Scroll Award from the John Philip Sousa Foundation that is awarded to outstanding community bands in North America. The SJAWE has performed at the New Jersey Music Educator’s Association Conference in 2000, 2005 & 2011, at the Association of Concert Bands National Convention in Allentown, PA in March of 2014 and at the 2017 Sousa Band Festival at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
The SJAWE makes their home at Mainland Regional HS in Linwood, NJ, just 8 miles southwest of Atlantic City. Rehearsals are held from 7:15-9:30 every Monday from August – June except holidays.
