The Downriver Community Band (DCB), founded in 1989, is a volunteer group of 65 adult musicians who play wind and percussion instruments.
The DCB’s mission is to give non-professional adult musicians a dynamic and enriching opportunity to perform, positively contribute to the cultural environment of the Downriver area, and perform in a venue that allows and encourages personal musical expression and growth. Our group is comprised of players with various musicianship levels. Members come from all walks of life.
Although our focus is on local venues and rehearsal spaces to support our musical palette, the group has participated in several road trips. We have performed in state festivals, including the Red Cedar Festival of Community Bands and The Motor City Festival of Bands. We were privileged to be one of the six bands chosen to participate in the very first SousaFest in Washington, DC in 2008, under the direction of Colonel Arnald Gabriel. The DCB was represented by a contingent of our members who traveled to Hawaii for both the 70th & 75th anniversary mass band concerts commemorating the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
As a concert band, we enjoy performing a wide variety of light and popular tunes transcribed or arranged for wind ensembles. Our programs consist of marches, big band, classical, jazz, show tunes, contemporary and original musical compositions.
Throughout the year, the DCB performs many free concerts at various indoor and ‘Concert in the Park” venues. We perform for our veterans, for holidays, for charity benefits, fundraisers, festivals, and other celebrity concerts, including a concert with flute virtuoso Alexandar Zonjic. Sponsorship for the group comes solely from individual community supporters.
2019 marks the 30th anniversary of the Downriver Community Band. Plans are underway to celebrate the event with a special Spring Concert featuring our guest conductor, Mr. James Curnow. Capping the year long anniversary season, the band will travel in 2020 to the Upper Peninsula to perform on historic Mackinac Island and in the Marquette Community Band Festival.
Downriver is the unofficial name for a collection of 18 suburban cities and townships in Wayne County, Michigan south of Detroit along the western shore of the Detroit River. The name derives from the fact that the Detroit River, after running more or less west along the banks of Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, then bends to flow largely south before emptying into Lake Erie. Communities to the south of the city can thus be accessed by traveling downriver along the waterway.
