Founded in 1995 under the leadership of its Conductor, Michael Flamhaft, the 50-piece Band of Long Island’s primary mission is to assist other notfor-profit organizations in raising funds to support their worthy causes and activities. The Band’s performers make this happen by playing concerts, giving workshops, and being involved in a variety of special activities. To date the Band of Long Island (BOLI) has raised a considerable amount of money to assist worthy organizations. In addition to the tangible benefit this funds provide, they also help other not-forprofits expand the general knowledge of their activities through the Band of Long Island’s widely diverse audiences.
Among BOLI’s important activities are a Commissioning Program to encourage the composition and performance of new works for band, especially music written by younger composers; the All-Star High School Band of Long Island, which brings together high-achieving student musicians for a gala performance under the baton of a renowned guest conductor, in addition to playing with BOLI’s seasoned adult performers; and a Student Intern Program, which gives advanced high school students heading for careers in music a chance to be part of the Band of Long Island to improve and polish their musical skills at a higher level before they enter college
